Mukachevo

Often the first train stop past the border into Ukraine from Slovakia or Hungary, Mukacheve is the unassuming secondary city of Transcarpathia and the site of the best hilltop castle in the area. First settled in the 9th century by White Croatians, it was subsequently seized and settled by Kievan Rus, Hungarians, Tatars, Transylvanians, Ukrainians, and Hungarians again. Today’s population is a true Transcarpathian mix, and Mukacheve reflects this with a lively and unpretentious small-town atmosphere.
